Why Is Sugar Cheaper in 2026?
- Big stocks: Sugar mills had more than 3 million tonnes of sugar in stock at the end of July 2026, while Pakistan uses about 564,000 tonnes a month.
- Bigger cane crop: The Federal Committee on Agriculture put 2025-26 sugarcane production at a provisional 97.2 million tonnes, well above target.
- Exports allowed carefully: On 14 September 2026 the ECC allowed the export of 200,000 tonnes of surplus sugar “with safeguards to maintain domestic price stability”.
- No fixed ex-mill price: The earlier deal that fixed the ex-mill price at Rs. 165 – 171 per kg ended, and mills have been selling below that level.
Sugar Price Outlook: Will Sugar Get Cheaper?
The new sugarcane crushing season is expected to start in November. Farmer groups say the cane area is about 21% higher this year and are asking for sugarcane price of Rs. 700 per 40kg. If the government sets a much higher cane price, mills may try to raise sugar prices later in the season. For now, large stocks are keeping retail sugar near Rs. 140 – 150 per kg.
