What Does “Cotton Cent” Mean?
Traders in Pakistan say “cotton cent today” or “cotton sent today” when they mean the international cotton price quoted in US cents per pound on the New York ICE exchange. One pound is 0.4536kg, so 1 maund (37.32kg) is about 82.3 pounds. Pakistani spinning mills watch this rate closely because they import a large share of their cotton from the USA, Brazil and Africa. When the cent rate rises, imported cotton becomes more expensive and local KCA spot rates usually follow.
How to Convert the Cotton Cent Rate into Rupees
- Take the New York price in cents per pound (for example 77.2).
- Multiply by 82.28 to get cents per maund: 77.2 × 82.28 = 6,352 cents = $63.52 per maund.
- Multiply by the dollar rate: $63.52 × Rs. 276.7 = about Rs. 17,577 per maund.
- For per kg: 77.2 ÷ 100 × 2.2046 × 276.7 = about Rs. 471 per kg.
Real import cost is higher because of the basis (quality premium), freight, insurance, duties and taxes, so the landed price of US or Brazilian cotton in Karachi is usually well above the futures value.
Why International Cotton Prices Are Low Right Now
- Fast US harvest: about 52% of the US crop had been harvested by late October, ahead of the five-year average of 45%.
- Competition from Brazil: Brazil, the top exporter, is offering large supplies.
- Weak Chinese demand: China’s cotton imports fell about 43% year-on-year in September.
- Support from India: India has extended duty-free cotton imports to 31 December, which supports demand.
Local vs International Cotton Rate
Local lint is now trading close to the converted New York price, and local phutti prices of Rs. 7,000 – 9,000 per 40kg have been under pressure. Industry groups have proposed a minimum support price of Rs. 10,000 per 40kg for phutti. See today’s local cotton rate in Pakistan with city-wise phutti rates, and all crops on mandi rates today.
