Two stories are shaping Pakistan’s farm sector today. Farmers’ groups are pressing the government to announce a wheat price before sowing starts, and new trade data shows food exports climbing, led by rice. Here is what happened and what it means for growers.

Gandum Ka Support Price: Kissan Ittehad Ka Mutalba
Pakistan Kissan Ittehad president Khalid Khokhar told a press conference in Lahore on Tuesday that wheat sowing is about to begin but the government has not yet announced its crop policy. He demanded a support price of Rs 5,000 per 40 kg and warned that farmers may not sow wheat if the announcement is delayed.
He said farmers cannot afford balanced fertiliser use because they are not recovering their production costs, and claimed that DAP consumption has fallen from 2.39 million tonnes to 1.25 million tonnes. These are the group’s own claims, not official figures.
For comparison, the government’s indicative price for the 2025–26 crop was Rs 3,500 per 40 kg, so the demand is Rs 1,500 higher. No price for the coming crop had been announced in the reports we reviewed.
Sugar is part of the same argument. Khokhar said sugarcane area has grown 16% to 2.454 million acres and sugar production could rise by 25–30%. He asked the government to keep enough sugar for domestic use until November and export the rest, warning that failing to do so would push cane prices down. Separately, Dawn reports that the government has already allowed the export of 200,000 tonnes of sugar this fiscal year.
Chawal Ki Export Mein Izafa
Pakistan’s raw food exports rose 7.68% in July–August of FY27 compared with a year earlier, according to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics data reported by Dawn. That reverses the sharp fall of last fiscal year, and rice is the main reason. Rice export value rose 24.68% over the two months.
Data compiled by Arif Habib Limited puts rice export volume at a record 655,000 tonnes, up 20%, with earnings of $392 million, up 25%. Food imports were slightly higher at $1.503 billion against $1.470 billion a year earlier, and the government has approved a plan to import wheat to cover local shortfalls.
Not every crop is doing well. In July, vegetable exports fell about 19% and fruit exports fell about 34%. Dawn also reported in August that the commerce ministry had extended the rice export subsidy scheme until 30 September, so exporters will be watching for a decision after that date.
Kissan Ke Liye Aaj Ka Mashwara (Assu)
- Cotton growers: keep scouting fields regularly for pests, and start picking once bolls are fully open.
- Wheat growers: prepare land and arrange certified seed and fertiliser now, before the main sowing window opens from mid-October (Katak).
- Sugarcane growers: watch for the sugar export decision, because it affects mill rates this season.
