Punjab district officials moved against substandard fertiliser dealers today, while a cotton market report highlights falling prices and rising pest pressure as the picking season enters its most critical weeks. Here is today’s round-up.

Muzaffargarh Mein Khaad Aur Beej Dealers Ke Khilaf Muhim
Following directions from Deputy Commissioner Hafiz Usman Tahir Jappa, Muzaffargarh’s Agriculture Department intensified inspections of fertiliser and seed dealers across the district. Teams led by Deputy Director Agriculture (Extension) Mian Tahir Mahmood Bhatti checked dealers and reviewed fertiliser sale and supply, including sales made by Bank of Punjab agents.
Officials said adequate stocks of urea and phosphate fertilisers were available in the market during the inspection. Dealers were directed to ensure quality fertilisers reach farmers at officially fixed prices, and officials warned that hoarding, illegal sale and profiteering would not be tolerated. The department said inspections would continue through the Katak wheat-sowing season.
Cotton Market: Qeematon Mein Girawat, Pink Bollworm Ka Khatra
A Business Recorder cotton market report notes that local cotton prices fell sharply in recent trading, dropping Rs1,000 to Rs1,200 per maund, tracking a decline in New York cotton futures. Lower prices pushed mills toward imported cotton, and ginners began releasing stock they had been holding back.
At the same time, cotton arrivals have run well ahead of last season. Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association data through mid-September put total arrivals at 2.39 million bales, up 19% year on year, with Punjab up nearly 25% and Sindh up 16%.
Central Cotton Research Institute officials say the crop has now entered a critical stage. Pink bollworm is the most significant current threat in the cotton belts of Punjab and Sindh, alongside whitefly, jassid and thrips, and the next few weeks of picking, weather and pest control will decide the size of the final crop.
Separately, the textile sector is watching trade policy: the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association has been in talks with the European Union on renewing the GSP+ trade scheme, which allows Pakistan to export a large share of goods to Europe duty-free.

- Cotton growers: scout fields closely for pink bollworm inside bolls, not just visible damage, and keep picking on schedule.
- All growers: buy fertiliser and seed only from licensed dealers and ask for a receipt, especially during a crackdown like this one.
- Wheat growers: continue land preparation, since certified seed and DAP availability were both part of today’s inspection.
